My ASM Journey – Introducing Tim Morgan, Service Engineer
Today we want to introduce Tim, who plays an integral role of Service Engineer, and share his ASM journey with you.
Before joining us in January 2023, Tim had previously been teaching drums, but realised he wanted to do something a bit different – although still hands on! He was looking for something with a different energy, a bit more technical, where he could utilise his problem solving skills.
Tim’s journey started a few months before he joined ASM, in August 2022 when, inspired by his brother who also works in the security industry, Tim carried out a Tavcom Intruder Alarm basics training course. With this new knowledge fresh in his mind, Tim started looking for his new career and luckily came across the job opening at ASM, applied, and was welcomed by the team, excited ot help him develop as an engineer.
Tim enjoyed getting stuck in immediately, and said “As part of a small team, you get to go out in your first few weeks with another engineer on a lot of jobs. It’s great to see so much in those early stages, and it helped me to pick up the basics really quickly, preparing me to confidently go out on my own earlier than I’d expected.”
Starting with just a foundation level knowledge of intruder alarms and the industry, Tim did an excellent job at building up his skills and confidence. As with all our engineers we were keen to see Tim carrying out work on his own, and after a few weeks of learning and confidence building, Tim was ready. Despite not working together in person, Tim has found that the team are all incredibly supportive and easy to communicate with, so he never feels like he is out on a job alone, and he has a strong support network behind him when needed.
ASM continues to develop our engineers skills throughout their career, encouraging them to untertake additional training courses, in Tims case Paxton Access Control training and Hikvision training. Tim commented, “ASM is a great place to work where I feel really supported and know that the company is investing in me. I’ve got more training to come up, and have reviews every 6 months, which helps both me and the company with our shared growth and development goals”
Over a year into his new career, Tim still looks forward to seeing what challenges the work day brings to him, and his favourite jobs to tackle are the ones where something’s wrong, but no one has identified what yet. He enjoys the problem solving and puzzle elements, and says “I like following a logical process – getting ideas and eliminating them through testing different solutions and fixes, one by one. There’s a great sense of achievement when working something through methodically, and finally getting the “lightbulb moment” for the solution that works.”.
Tim is looking ahead positively towards the many opportunities a career in the security industry can offer. From moving into project management or sales roles, or using his knowledge to train the next generation of engineers, seeing the different routes and possibilities in the industry, Tim sees the open-endedness as motivation to learn more and keep growing, all with no risk of getting bored!
